When one of motorsport's leading manufacturers of fire and safety systems needed
a new enclosure for its on-vehicle fire extinguisher systems, the company turned to Oxfordshire-based customDesignTechnologies.
The result was a simple two-piece Bafbox plastic housing produced in ABS with a
laminated oating to provide the carbon-fibre look and feel so beloved of the motorsport industry.
The plastic enclosure replaced a previous housing made from die-cast metal and
offered a significant advantage in terms of weight, an important consideration in all motorsport applications.
customDesignTechnology's box also offered savings on production costs as it was
supplied pre-drilled and screenprinted. The original diecast metal box had to be drilled, sent out for powder coating and
then have labels applied.
The overall effect of the new Bafbox enclosure was a more professional look which
was felt to be an important asset in the world of motorsport. In addition, the new housing is far easier to assemble and makes
the overall system more user friendly for maintenance such as changing batteries and so forth.
The new on-vehicle
fire extinguisher system has proved so popular that it now features on a number of leading racing cars in Formula 3 and Formula
3000 and will also be carried in world rally championship winning manufacturers' vehicles in 2004.
